I'm a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, a Registered Nurse, a mom, a step-mom, a wife, an athlete, and a human.
I was pretty active as a kid – I showed horses all spring/summer/fall, was on the cross-country ski team in the winter, and rode my bike EVERYWHERE! As an adult, I kind of fell off the fitness wagon until I started running in my early 40’s. I used the Couch to 5K program, which was a very doable walk/run program designed to get couch potatoes like me off the couch and running 3.1 miles in 9 weeks. When I completed my first 5K, I felt like I could do ANYTHING!! (Except run a 10K, because that’s twice as far! Haha)
What I've learned - It wasn't just about the running!
It’s funny how when you make a positive change in one area of your life, it seems to open you up to making additional changes. Once the running bug bit me, I realized I needed to make some changes to my habits so that my body was able to complete those longer distances. Bit by bit, I started making tweaks to other aspects of my health – nutrition, stress reduction, sleep – in order to keep doing what I loved. I eventually completed 5 marathons. This also aligned with work I was most passionate about as a nurse: helping physicians, nurses and other health care workers make small changes in their daily routines and habits to help them respond differently to work-related stressors, become more mindful in their daily lives, and improve overall wellbeing.
A common thread
One thing that has stuck with me all these years is the value of creating a vision for yourself, setting goals to move towards that vision, having a plan and starting small. And like the Couch to 5K, ya gotta keep it doable. When the inevitable happens (Hello family & work obligations! Hello health issues!) you can tweak/flex/expand/contract your plan and adjust your goals to meet your current needs while still moving towards your vision for your health and well-being. And honestly, your goals, and even your vision, may change over time too, but when you have that framework to draw on, you can roll with whatever comes your way.
